1. 청소 전: 공간 비우기와 환기
본격적으로 유리를 줍기 전, 가장 먼저 해야 할 일입니다.
- 인원 대피: 사람과 반려동물은 즉시 방에서 나가게 합니다.
- 환기 필수: 창문이나 문을 열어 5~10분간 충분히 외부 공기가 통하게 합니다.
- 공조기 중단: 중앙 냉난방 시스템이나 에어컨이 작동 중이라면 즉시 끕니다. 수은 증기가 집 전체로 퍼지는 것을 막기 위함입니다.
- 준비물:
- 단단한 종이나 판지
- 점착 테이프(덕트 테이프 등)
- 젖은 키친타월 또는 물티슈
- 밀봉 가능한 유리병(금속 뚜껑) 또는 비닐 지퍼백
2. 청소 중: 진공청소기 사용 금지!
가장 중요한 규칙은 절대 진공청소기를 사용하지 않는 것입니다. 청소기가 수은 가루나 증기를 공기 중으로 더 널리 퍼뜨릴 수 있기 때문입니다.
- 수동 수거: 단단한 종이나 판지를 이용해 유리 파편과 가루를 조심스럽게 쓸어 담습니다.
- 테이프 활용: 눈에 잘 보이지 않는 미세한 파편과 가루는 테이프를 이용해 찍어냅니다. 사용한 테이프는 준비한 유리병이나 비닐백에 바로 넣으세요.
- 표면 닦기: 하드 우드나 타일 같은 딱딱한 바닥은 젖은 키친타월로 꼼꼼히 닦아냅니다.
- 밀봉: 모든 청소 도구와 파편을 밀봉 가능한 용기에 넣습니다.
3. 청소 후: 올바른 폐기 방법
뒷정리가 끝났다고 해서 안심하기엔 이릅니다.
- 즉시 실외 배출: 파편과 청소에 사용한 물건이 든 봉투를 즉시 집 밖 쓰레기통이나 보호된 실외 구역으로 옮기세요. 절대 실내에 방치하면 안 됩니다.
- 폐기 규정 확인: 지자체에 따라 폐형광등(파손 포함) 처리 방식이 다를 수 있습니다. 전용 수거함에 버리거나, 규정에 따라 분리배출 하세요.
- 지속 환기: 가능하면 청소 후에도 몇 시간 동안은 해당 방을 환기시키고 냉난방기 가동을 자제하는 것이 좋습니다.

Before Cleanup
- Have people and pets leave the room.
- Air out the room for 5-10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor environment.
- Shut off the central forced air heating/air-conditioning system, if you have one.
- Collect materials needed to clean up broken bulb:
- stiff paper or cardboard;
- sticky tape;
- damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes (for hard surfaces); and
- a glass jar with a metal lid or a sealable plastic bag.
During Cleanup
- DO NOT VACUUM. Vacuuming is not recommended unless broken glass remains after all other cleanup steps have been taken. Vacuuming could spread mercury-containing powder or mercury vapor.
- Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder. Scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder. Place the used tape in the glass jar or plastic bag. - Place cleanup materials in a sealable container.
After Cleanup
- Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials, including vacuum cleaner bags, outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of. Avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors.
- Next, check with your local government about disposal requirements in your area, because some localities require fluorescent bulbs (broken or unbroken) be taken to a local recycling center. If there is no such requirement in your area, you can dispose of the materials with your household trash.
- If practical, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the heating/air conditioning system shut off for several hours.
